What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of exercise developed by German-born Joseph Pilates. The Pilates method is designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body. Pilates movements focus on postural symmetry, breath control, abdominal strength, spine, pelvis and shoulder stabilization, muscular flexibility, joint mobility, and strengthening through the complete range of motion of all joints. The entire body is trained, integrating upper and lower extremities with the trunk. This can be very different from many exercise systems that effectively isolate only one muscle group.
What are the Benefits of Pilates?
With systematic practice of exercises and breathing patterns, Pilates has proven it's value within professional sports training as well as rehabilitative care of all kinds. Is is effective enough to benefit the professional athlete and simultaneously gentle enough for the injured or elderly.
Reduction of back pain and improved posture are some of the many benefits of the method and others include: increased spine mobility and muscle flexibility, improved muscular endurance, improved body awareness, and improved bone density. The ultimate goal of Pilates is a spine that moves freely with control in all directions; flexion, extension, sidebending and rotation as well as in combinations of those movements.
The benefits of this program in conjunction with Chiropractic care is incredible. The strengthening through Pilates adds to the integrity of the adjustment and assists in the decompression of the spine, while the adjustment removes interference from the central nervous system, thus providing a clear path for the manifestation of our innate intelligence.
